I was present in Perth, Australia in 1990 where INWAT was conceived. It has come a long way and matured into an organization, a global network with over thousand members in about 75 countries. It has always worked passionately and raised its voice to counter the cynical and ruthless promotion of tobacco to girls and women around the World. It sees its mission in promoting gender sensitive tobacco control policies. Its motto is to work towards women’s leadership in public health.
The tobacco problem among women is a very complex issue and is related to her overall place in the society. Women who have a lot of confidence in themselves and are skilled are not likely to take to tobacco use. I would like to see INWAT stimulate skill training for girls to handle any risk situation in their lives. I wish nothing but the best for INWAT. |
